Vibraphone

Joel Ross

Joel Ross plays vibraphone and leads a band called Good Vibes, a name that doubles as a description of what he has built: a working group known for generosity as much as chops. He records for Blue Note, one of the genre's most storied labels, and has used that platform to keep pushing his sound forward.

His recent albums include Nublues, released in 2024, and Gospel Music, released in 2026. Both extend a body of work that treats the vibraphone not as a novelty instrument but as a full harmonic and rhythmic voice at the center of a band. DownBeat has recognized him with rising-star honors, part of a broader critical consensus that he is one of the most important bandleaders of his generation.

What distinguishes Ross beyond his own playing is who passes through his bands. Good Vibes has functioned as a kind of finishing school, and a number of the players who have come up alongside him are now leading their own groups. He is, in that sense, a hub as much as a headliner.
